How do you see artists who are not from the mainstream art scene? Do you label them as outsider artists? So, what comes to your mind when you hear the term 𝘖𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘈𝘳𝘵? Is it an art outside of mainstream culture, uncultivated and constrained by social and formalist expectations? Is it an art produced by a certain cultural group? Also, do these labels help or limit us in appreciating the artworks? More importantly, is this terminology still relevant?
By exhibiting a selection of contemporary artworks of Anton Ismael and Bastian Hansen, Selain Seliyan seeks to reflect on the idea of outsider art (or even what art is) while at the same time questioning the position of 'the other' artists in the mainstream art world. By interrogating this matter, perhaps we can make art home for what is called the Other.
If art is an expression, why limit human voices and experiences to be shared?
